City Bulky Pickup vs. Calling a Hauler
The City of Milwaukee runs its own sanitation, and it publishes exactly what it will and won’t do with bulky items. It’s worth reading before you book anyone.
One Free Cubic Yard
On your regular collection day the City takes about a cubic yard of bulky items — roughly a recliner or two garbage carts — at your usual collection point.
A Paid Special Pickup
Above that, you request a special pickup: one fee for one to four cubic yards, a bigger one for four to six. You still bring it all outside.
Nothing Over Six Yards
Loads over six cubic yards aren’t eligible, and the City says the property gets referred to Neighborhood Services as a violation.
Not Bulky Waste at All
Appliances, TVs and electronics, tires and yard waste aren’t collected curbside. They go to the Drop Off Centers, where residents unload alone.
Only properties on City garbage service qualify, and the suburbs each run their own system. Waukesha residents schedule and prepay a private hauler for bulky items, Racine charges per item at its transfer station, and New Berlin’s recycling center turns away furniture and mattresses. If the pile is small, already at the curb and can wait, the City program may be cheaper. If it’s in the basement, it’s an appliance, or it’s bigger than six yards, that’s our job.
