A Company Town Turned Neighborhood
Bay View grew up around the Milwaukee Iron Company’s rolling mill, opened in 1868 on 27.5 acres with 76.5 acres of worker housing beside it. It was its own village from 1879 until joining Milwaukee in 1887.
Those worker homes are still here — the typical Bay View house dates to 1944 — and about 61 percent are owner-occupied. Basements are low and the stairs are steep, which is exactly where furniture ends up.
