How to get rid of a mattress in Milwaukee

The short answer

Mattress removal in Milwaukee is priced by size, flat:

The minimum per visit is $75. Every price above covers carrying it out from wherever it is, hauling and disposal. No stair charge.

Buy the set, not the pieces

Worth a moment of arithmetic. A queen mattress on its own is $103. A box spring on its own is $92. Separately that is $103 + $92 = $195. Booked as a mattress + box spring set it is $143.

So if both are going, book the set. Almost everyone in a Milwaukee bedroom clear-out has both — box springs are still standard here because so much of the housing stock predates platform beds — and the number of people who pay $195 instead of $143 by ticking the wrong two boxes is higher than it should be. Tick the set.

Why you cannot just put it in the alley

Milwaukee's alley culture makes people assume anything can go behind the garage. It cannot. Mattresses are the single most commonly refused bulk item across the metro, and each municipality — the city, Wauwatosa, West Allis, Greenfield, Shorewood, Cudahy — sets its own bulky-item rules for what it will collect, when, and in what quantity. Check your own municipality's collection page before you drag anything out.

Two things you should assume are true anywhere in the metro:

• It has to be at the collection point on the right day, not whenever you feel like carrying it out. A mattress that sits in an alley for a week is a complaint and a possible citation against the property owner.
• It has to be dry. Between lake-effect damp, spring rain and snowmelt, a mattress left outside in Milwaukee is a saturated mattress within a day, and a saturated mattress is heavier than you think and less likely to be accepted.

Donation, recycling, and the honest limits

Donation is mostly out. Almost no charity in the metro accepts used mattresses, for health-code reasons that are not negotiable. Assume no unless a specific organization tells you otherwise.

Recycling exists but you do the driving. Mattresses are genuinely recyclable — steel from the springs, foam, fiber, timber from the box spring frame. Facilities that accept them charge to do it and keep their own hours. If you want to route yours that way, ring ahead and confirm current terms, because they change.

Marketplace is a bad idea. Reselling a used mattress is not something buyers in this city are lining up for, and you will spend two weeks learning that.

Which leaves either your municipality's program, on its schedule, with you doing the carry — or a flat price and someone else doing the carry.

The Milwaukee staircase problem

Here is the specific reason mattress removal is worth paying for in this city. Bedrooms in Milwaukee's older housing are rarely at street level.

• Upper units of two-flats. Bay View, Riverwest, Lincoln Village, Washington Heights, Harambee. The enclosed rear stair turns on a landing. A queen box spring is a rigid rectangle and rigid rectangles do not turn corners. This is the classic case where the box spring physically cannot come down the way it went up — often it went up before a later renovation narrowed the stairwell.
• Polish flats. The upper cottage is up a steep exterior stoop with a tight door at the top. In February that stoop is ice.
• Bungalow attic bedrooms. Milwaukee bungalows frequently have a finished half-story up a very steep, very narrow stair with low headroom. A king mattress up there is a two-person, elbows-in job.
• Third-floor walk-ups on the Lower East Side. Common around UWM, and common in May when the leases turn.

None of it changes the price. $103 for the queen is $103 on the third floor.

Damp, bed bugs, and what we will still take

Two Milwaukee-specific conditions come up constantly.

Basement damp. A spare mattress stored in a South Shore basement — Bay View, St. Francis, Cudahy — will be musty within a season. Old stone and cream city brick foundations a few blocks from Lake Michigan simply hold moisture. If it smells, that is the end of any donation or resale plan.

Bed bugs. It happens, particularly in older multi-unit buildings, and people are embarrassed to say so. Tell us at booking. We will still take it; we just bag and handle it differently so nothing travels. Not telling us is how a problem spreads to the next building.
