How to get rid of a couch in Milwaukee

The short answer

A sofa or couch is $126 with JunkRabbit in Milwaukee. Flat price, quoted online before anyone drives over. Why a Milwaukee couch is harder than it looks

This city's housing stock is unusually rough on furniture, and it is the reason so many people give up on doing it themselves.

• Two-flats and duplexes. Half the near-north and near-south side is upper-and-lower. The rear staircase is enclosed, narrow, and turns ninety degrees on a small landing halfway up. A seven-foot sofa does not turn ninety degrees on a small landing.
• Polish flats. An original cottage jacked up with a new lower unit built underneath. The upper is reached by a steep exterior stoop, the lower by half a flight down. Neither route was designed around a sectional.
• Bungalow gangways. On a standard narrow Milwaukee lot the space between your house and the neighbor's is barely wider than the couch. Carrying it out the side door means turning it on edge and walking sideways for forty feet.
• No driveway. Most older city blocks park on the street and garage off the alley. There is no pull-up-to-the-door option.
• Third Ward and Walker's Point lofts. Converted warehouses with freight elevators, reserved loading times, and a building manager who wants notice.

The free routes, honestly

Free is worth trying first, and sometimes it works.

Municipal bulk collection. Milwaukee and each surrounding municipality — Wauwatosa, West Allis, Greenfield, Shorewood, Cudahy — run their own bulky-item rules, and they differ from each other in scheduling, quantity limits and what they will take at all. Check your own municipality's collection page for the current terms. Two things are consistent across the metro: you have to get the couch to the curb or the alley yourself, and it has to survive sitting outside until the truck comes.

Donation. Thrift operations around the metro will take clean upholstery in good structural shape. They will not take a couch that has been in a damp basement, and near the lake that rules out a lot of them — see the section below. Call first and ask whether they do pickups, because most want you to deliver.

Buy Nothing and Marketplace. Genuinely works for mid-century pieces and decent leather. Budget for two no-shows before someone with a pickup actually arrives, and remember you are the one who has to get it down the stairs to meet them.

The lake-effect damp problem

If the couch has been stored in a basement in Bay View, St. Francis, Cudahy or anywhere else along the South Shore, smell it before you plan on donating it. Old Milwaukee basements — stone or cream city brick foundations, minimal drainage, groundwater from a lake a few blocks away — hold moisture all summer. Upholstery and foam absorb it. A sofa that looks perfect can be unmistakably musty, and no thrift operation, no Marketplace buyer and no relative is going to take it.

The same goes for anything stored on an unheated back porch through the winter. Milwaukee gets long stretches of freeze and thaw between November and April, and fabric that has cycled through that a few times is finished. At that point the realistic choice is the curb or a hauler, and the hauler is the one who does not leave it sitting on your terrace for three weeks.
